30+ Ways Stay At Home Moms Can Make Extra Money
1. Sell your unwanted stuff
Take a Saturday morning to sift through your closets, basement, and garage. I’ll bet you’ll find plenty of stuff you can get rid of for cash on eBay and Craigslist -that’s exactly how I found my kids’ bunk bed!
But you can also sell your unwanted stuff on apps like OfferUp and Letgo, which makes this so much easier.
2. Answer surveys
Survey companies I recommend include Harris Poll Online, Survey Junkie, Inbox Dollars, SurveyClub, PineCone Research, One Opinion, Earning Station, and Swagbucks. These survey companies are free to join and free to use! You get paid to share your opinion (while your kids are napping!) and to test products.
It’s best to sign up for as many as you can, that way you can receive the most surveys and make the most money. You can read more about that here.
3. Drive for Uber or Lyft
This is something you can totally do on Friday nights and weekends when demand is the highest (which means more money for you!) because you can drive as little or as much as you want to! You can set your own schedule, but the amount of money you make depends on your location and how often you drive.
4. Try Swagbucks
Swagbucks allows me to earn Amazon gift cards with very little work. I primarily use it to do my online searches like Google, watch online video, play games, and take surveys. You earn points that you can redeem for cash, gift cards, and more! You’ll also receive a free $5 bonus just for signing up through my link!
5. Sell your gift cards
You probably didn’t know you could turn your unwanted gift cards into cash, did you?! My favorite website for buying and selling used gift cards is Cardpool – even if you only have $5 balance, you can still get up to 92% cash back for your gift card!
Here’s how it works:
- Go to Cardpool.com
- Click “sell gift cards”
- Enter your gift card, see your payout, and get paid!
6. Tutor someone
Know someone who has a child that’s struggling with a subject in school? Why not offer to tutor them! In most cases, you don’t need any formal education or special certificates.
You can also tutor online from the comfort of your home! The easiest way to get started is to teach English and earn $14-$22 an hour with VIPKid. You set your own hours and lesson plans are provided for you!
7. Rent your home
Turning your house into a vacation home is easy when you become a host with Airbnb. Or, if you decide to only rent your guest bedroom and bathroom, you can do that too!
Airbnb offers accidental damage coverage for homeowners that are leery about opening their home to strangers. Plus, you’re covered if anyone gets hurt while staying on your property! Depending on where you live, you could earn up to $1,000 a month.
8. Rent out your car
Just like renting your home, you can rent out your car too! If you have an extra vehicle sitting in the driveway, like we did, you can turn it into cash by letting someone else drive it.
Turo is a great car rental service company that will cover your vehicle with liability insurance, as well as, theft and damage coverage. So how much can you earn? Let’s say your vehicle’s market value is $8,000 – if you rent your car for just 10 days per month, you could earn almost $3,000 a year!
9. Rent out your garage space
If people are always asking you to store stuff in YOUR garage, then it may be time to start collecting storage fees. But what if you don’t have a garage? Well, you can charge people to store their belongings in your basement too!
10. Join Ebates and get a FREE $10 gift card
Ebates is a website that gives you FREE cash back on your normal online purchases at places like Walmart, Amazon, Target, Macy’s, and more. You’ll also receive a free $10 gift card just for signing up through my link!
Here’s how to earn your gift card:
- Sign up for Ebates with your Facebook, Google+, or email address – it’s FREE!
- Log into your Ebates account the next time you need to buy something so you can get up to 40% cash back at thousands of your favorite stores! You’ll need to make your first purchase within 90 days and spend at least $25.
- Your account will be credited and your gift card (or cash – whichever you choose!) will be on the way!
11. Pet sit or walk dogs
Pet parents always need sitters, especially whenever they have to leave out for a trip. This is a great business to start if you’re an animal lover because you can advertise your services throughout your neighborhood and on social media!
Plus, you can set your own hours by only offering your pet sitting or dog-walking services on evenings and weekends.
12. Watch other people’s kids along with your own
I’m sure you have a few mommy friends that could benefit from a kid-free date night with their partner or moms that work outside the home that will happily pay you to watch their kids!
But if asking your friends and networking makes you feel a little uncomfortable, you can always sign up for Care.com to find jobs near you that you can take at $10+ an hour.
13. Clean homes
If you have a knack for cleaning and organizing, there are plenty of people that will pay you to give them a hand! Because cleaning is something people dread. Help them get their house (or a single room) in order and you can charge up to $20/hr in some areas.
14. Take photos for people
Photography is such an easy skill that you can pick up in no time! All you need is a DSLR camera (this is the one I have), a practice photo session, and then you can tell everyone you know that you’re happy to take their portraits at a discounted price.
I bought a Nikon camera a few months ago because I got tired of chasing photographers to take pictures of my kids. But once I started sharing my mom-tography skills on social media, people flooded my DM’s asking me to take their photos too! It was a fun little hobby that I turned into extra cash when I needed it.
15. Write for others
Becoming a freelance writer has never been easier thanks to websites like Upwork and Fiverr. Business owners come to these websites looking for blog articles, email content, graphic design, and more. Simply create an account and start bidding for gigs right away!
You can accept as many projects as you’d like, as long as you can deliver your work on-time. Don’t overwhelm yourself just to make more money.
16. Test websites
Yes! You can earn money to review websites and apps. Companies like UserTesting will pay you to visit websites or apps and give your feedback in a short video. Earn $10 per test you complete!
17. Snap a photo of your receipt and earn a FREE $10
Use the Ibotta App to get FREE cash back on groceries every time you upload a picture of your receipt! Here’s how you can earn a free $10 bonus when you get the app:
- Sign up for Ibotta (through my link!)
- Find offers that are already on your grocery list before you shop
- Upload your first receipt after checkout
- Your cash back will be in your Ibotta account within 48 hours!
Some of the Cash Back offers I’ve redeemed include:
- $0.50 cash back for milk
- $1.00 cash back for bread
- $0.25 cash back for bananas
- $1.25 cash back for Dove bar soap
You can send the money straight to your Paypal account once you’ve earned $20! But my favorite thing about Ibotta is you can find many offers that are not tied to a specific brand.
18. Become a virtual assistant
Virtual assistants are paid to do a number of tasks a business needs to get done but doesn’t have the time or skills to complete them. So if you’re great at managing social media accounts, writing emails, editing blog posts, scheduling appointments, answering phone calls, and more, then you should start advertising your services to small business owners in your area!
19. Plan an event
Do you love planning parties, celebrations, and get-togethers? You can start planning events for other people (think birthday parties, family reunions, weddings, etc.) and get paid for your time! You can charge by the hour or event type.
20. Bake desserts
You can make an extra $200+ a month selling baked goods to your family and friends. Just post your delicious desserts on Facebook and watch the orders start coming in!
21. Enter contests and giveaways
Now, there’s no guarantee that you will win anything. But the more contests and giveaways you enter, your chances of winning will increase! You may win cash, gift cars, vacations, electronics, food, and more.
Start collecting empty bottles, cans, and scrap metal NOW so you can get paid in cash for recycling them! Visit Earth911.com to find a recycling center in your area.
23. Run errands for people
Get paid to pick up food, laundry, clean someone’s home, or even deliver groceries. With Shipt, you can earn up to $22/hr to shop and deliver groceries to clients!
24. Get a part-time job
Finding a part-time job is much easier during the summer months and holiday season. The extra income you make will come in handy if you want to take a vacation or need cash for holiday shopping. My favorite place to search for jobs is Indeed.
25. Sell your breast milk
Breastfeeding doesn’t only help you to save you money on infant formula, but it can make you extra income too! Breast milk can sell for $1-$2.50 per ounce online, sometimes more! Let’s say you sold 25 ounces of breast milk per day at $2.50 each, you’d make almost $23,000 a year!
26. Flip items
Many people make a living flipping items, from homes to antique furniture and art. If you find a hidden gem that’s in need of TLC, you can flip it for a quick profit on eBay or Craigslist.
27. Have a yard sale
If you don’t want to list your stuff on Craigslist, you can always have a traditional yard sale. Get your neighbors involved, create signs, and spread the word on social media.
28. Get rid of old movies, music, and electronics
Before you start tossing your old DVDs, CDs, video games, and electronics you can sell them on Decluttr. Scan the barcodes of items you don’t want to see how much money you’ll get, and Decluttr will buy your items from you!
29. Sell your children’s clothes
Go through your child’s closets and I’ll bet you’ll find a bunch of stuff they can no longer wear (think hats, pajamas, shoes, belts, pants, tops, etc). You can sell their outgrown stuff at local children’s resale (like Once Upon A Child) and consignment stores, or even online at ThredUp, Poshmark, Craigslist, and eBay!
30. Sell your children’s toys
When you start sifting through your child’s old stuff, you can’t forget about the toys they no longer play with too! Because parents, like me, love to buy big wheels, electronics, and learning toys secondhand.
31. Sell on Etsy
Etsy is the perfect place to sell handmade goods. On Etsy, you can sell crochet items (scarves, handbags, etc), custom t-shirts, invitations, artwork, and so much more!
