Are you ready to cut the cord, but you don’t want to give up your favorite shows or movies? I know how you feel.
For months I contemplated if it was the right decision for our family, too. Of course, I knew it would save us a ton of money because we were paying $1,200 a year (whoa!).
Even though we could barely afford it, like for many families, cable TV was just a normal part of our life. The kids wanted to wake up to Bubble Guppies in the morning and watch Spongebob in the afternoon.
Plus my husband wasn’t willing to miss a Pittsburgh Steelers game for the world.
So is it really possible to get rid of cable and still watch TV?
In short, yes! There are more alternatives to cable TV available now than ever.

But if you still have your cable TV service, cutting the cord is the first step.
So if you’ve already done this, woo-hoo! You can skip over this section and continue reading below.
Here’s what you need to do to get rid of your cable TV bill for good:
- Make sure you’re not locked in a contract. Call your cable tv or satellite company to let them know you want to cancel services.
- If you have equipment you’re renting, ask your cable company how you can return it. Because getting hit with additional fees is no fun.
- Keep your internet. This will come in handy when you want to watch your favorite shows, movies, and sports.
3 Ways to Still Watch TV After Getting Rid of Cable
1. HDTV ANTENNA
Remember the good old days when you had to watch tv with an antenna? Well, you still can! Investing in a good HDTV antenna (like this one!) will give you live access to local broadcast channels for FREE!
This way you can watch popular hit TV shows like Blackish, The Voice, Empire, Big Brother, and more on popular networks like CBS, FOX, NBC, and ABC. The picture on these antennas is crystal clear, perfect for high-definition and smart TVs.
So if you don’t already own one, I highly recommend you grab the HDTV antenna we use here!
Cost: $15 and up
2. LIVE TV STREAMING APPS
As more people trade in their cable boxes for antennas, Live TV streaming apps are popping up all over the place. Some of the most popular Live TV streaming services available are:
- Sling TV
- DirecTV Now
- Hulu with Live TV
But how do you decide which streaming service app is best for your family? Here are 4 factors you might want to consider: price, number of channels, channel list, and supported devices.
We personally subscribe to Hulu with Live TV. Our package includes 50+ Top Live entertainment, sports, and news Channels that our family loves. Plus, we can still catch up on full-season episodes that air next day, and the entire Hulu streaming library which is ALWAYS full of goodies!
Most Live TV streaming apps like Hulu support Apple & Android devices, Mac & PC, Roku, and Fire TV Sticks.

Cost: FREE for 7 days, then $39.99/month for 50+ channels plus Hulu On Demand
3. WATCH NETFLIX (FOR FREE)
My kids love Netflix! And I can binge-watch almost ANYTHING, which makes Netflix an insanely cheap way to entertain the whole family.
But these days everyone has a Netflix account, right? So instead of signing up for one yourself, you can watch Netflix for FREE by having your family or friends share their account with you!
We did this for 4 years (before eventually getting our own) using my mother-in-law’s Netflix account and never paid a dime. So it definitely doesn’t hurt to ask! The worst someone can say is no.
Or you can offer to split the monthly bill with the account holder for upgrading/sharing their subscription – Win-win!
Cost: from $7.99 a month (or as low as $0.00 when shared!)
Wrapping It Up
So in a nutshell, here’s how to get rid of cable and still watch tv:
1) Cut the cord if you haven’t already done so
2) Invest in an HDTV Antenna
3) Choose a Live TV streaming service like Hulu to watch live sports and entertainment
4) Ask your circle of family/friends if they’d be willing to share their Netflix account with you before YOU sign up!
And that’s it – our secret to watching tv after getting rid of cable and it saves us over $700/year. But the most rewarding part is my kids don’t even notice the cable cord is gone! (hehe)
