Being able to stay home with your kids is a blessing, but sometimes it can leave you feeling BORED out of your mind. When your only interaction is with toddlers you start to really miss having adult conversations.
So what do you do when you are stuck in the house most days without anyone to talk to?
The answer for me was simple – take up a hobby! Yes, you’re busy changing diapers, cleaning after kids, doing laundry etc, but you need SOMETHING outside of just being Mom.
And starting a hobby is the perfect solution simply because it’s YOURS – you won’t have to share it with your husband or your kids!
If you need help finding fun things to do when you’re bored, consider this round-up of my favorite hobbies for stay at home moms that are totally affordable!

7 Frugal Hobbies for Stay At Home Moms That Aren’t Boring
Recently I decided to invest in a Nikon DSLR camera just so that I could take more pictures of my kids. I was so tired of chasing photographers to snap photos for me because my kids grow fast and I don’t want to miss a beat.
So once my camera arrived, I watched a ton of YouTube videos, dragged my kids to the park, and started snapping away. I did NOT expect to actually enjoy taking pictures!
Once I began sharing my mom-tography skills on social media, other moms reached out to ask if I could take their photos too!
So this fantastic investment turned out to be a fun little hobby that helps me earn extra cash when I want to, plus I save money taking my own kids’ portraits!
I promise you don’t need to be techy or a genius to know how to work a good camera like this one. With a little practice (and watching YouTube!), you’ll feel like a pro in no-time. 🙂
2. PICK UP A BOOK
When you’re a stay at home mom you’ll have some good days and you’ll have some bad days. That’s why I love to read. It’s such a great way to escape from reality and unwind.
All you need is a good book and a glass of red wine – trust me!
My favorite place to find great books is at my local library because I don’t have to spend any money. But you can also swap books with friends, or even buy books on the cheap at used bookstores.
3. FALL IN LOVE WITH FITNESS
Have you been wanting to lead a healthier lifestyle? It’s never too late to get into shape and you don’t need an expensive gym membership either!
There are so many workouts and exercises you can watch on YouTube, for FREE!
Just pull out your smartphone or tablet while your kids are napping and find a 30-minute workout to do right in the comfort of your home! This is what I try to do every morning because it really helps to set the tone for the rest of my day.
But if watching Youtube videos isn’t your thing, you can start running or walking laps in your neighborhood, too, because it won’t cost you a dime!
4. PLANT A GARDEN
If you want to save a little money on fruits and veggies, then planting a garden might be a perfect hobby for you! You can start with a small herb garden in your kitchen and work your way up to planting more produce right in your backyard.
5. SHARPEN YOUR COOKING SKILLS
Speaking of food, one of my favorite channels to watch before we got rid of our cable TV was The Food Network. I could seriously binge-watch hours of Chopped without even realizing it. The idea of baking and cooking ingredients from scratch is fascinating to me!
So if that’s something that intrigues you too, learning to cook like Rachael Ray could be something you might find fun! You can sign up for cooking classes in your area, try new recipes, and even learn cool ways to sneak more vegetables into your kids’ meals (without them tasting a difference!).
And when you need meal ideas, I highly recommend the $5 Meal Plan because it helped us cut our grocery bill in half!
6. START KNITTING
Learn to get really good with a sewing machine or a crochet needle, and you’ll save money on clothes, blankets, scarves, and so much more. You could even turn your new hobby skills into a side hustle that makes you money because people LOVE to buy these handmade crafts!
7. WRITE EVERY DAY
This is my favorite hobby – obviously, or you wouldn’t be reading this article now! Because in those moments when I thought I was going to lose my mind, it was writing every day that kept me sane.
I started with journaling my thoughts and that really helped me to re-discover my identity aside from just being a wife and mom, which is how I found my love for writing!
I realized there weren’t just times that I felt bored as a stay at home mom, but I got lonely too. So starting this blog allows me to connect with other moms in a fun, creative way!
If you’ve been thinking about starting a blog, I can’t tell you enough how absolutely rewarding it is! You can make new friends, express your creativity, and even make money from home.
I know so many women that began blogging for fun and then started making a full-time income so they could remain home with their kids and contribute to their family’s finances – you can do it too!
I have an easy, step-by-step tutorial that shows you how to get your blog up and running in minutes – without you needing to be great with computers!
Finding a hobby that you enjoy as a stay at home mom can make a HUGE difference in your life. For me, writing (and starting this blog) helped me to become a much happier mom, and I want that to happen for you too!
So take a moment to figure out what you’re passionate about. What do you like to do when no one else is around? (napping doesn’t count!)
